★ Ahlgrens — Makers of Bilar — the small marshmallow cars Sweden eats more of than anyone. ★
Ahlgrens.
Ahlgrens is the Swedish confectioner behind Bilar, the country's bestselling candy. Born in 1953 as a marshmallow experiment that went 'wrong,' the candy has been the same — and Sweden's #1 — for over seventy years.
★ The story ★
Founded 1885 · Sweden
The Ahlgren family had been in the Swedish confectionery business since 1885 in Gävle, central Sweden. The decisive product, though, didn't arrive until 1953 — when factory workers trying to make standard marshmallows produced something dense, springy and small-pieced instead of fluffy and cylindrical. The result was a small, car-shaped foam candy with a distinctly chewy mouthfeel: more substantial than American marshmallow, softer than a gummy, faintly raspberry-flavoured.
The candy was named Bilar — Swedish for 'cars' — in 1970. It has been Sweden's bestselling candy for decades. More than 120 million Bilar are produced every year. The company itself likes to point out that the candy is technically 'the world's most-sold car,' outselling Volkswagen, Toyota, and every actual automobile by units.
Ahlgrens is now part of the Cloetta family of brands, which gives Bilar the production scale and distribution it needs to keep up with that demand. The recipe is intentionally unchanged — Bilar today taste essentially the way they did in the 1970s, which is the whole point. The product hasn't needed reinvention.

What's happened lately
Ahlgrens Bilar continue to dominate the Swedish candy charts year over year — the brand routinely accounts for around 5% of all candy sales in Sweden by itself, and the gap to #2 hasn't meaningfully closed in decades. In 2024-2025, Cloetta pushed Bilar harder internationally, with expanded US and German retail distribution and several limited-edition flavour drops aimed at the Nordic-curious export market.
There's also been a small wave of Bilar-derived products — sour versions, mini formats, tropical seasonal runs — though the company has been careful not to alter the original. The strategy is heritage protection, not heritage cannibalisation.
★ Why Ahlgrens matters ★
The Swedish-candy context
Bilar are the Swedish candy that nearly every Swede has eaten and almost every Swede admits to still eating. There aren't many product categories in any country where a single SKU dominates that completely for that long — the closest American analogue might be Reese's Cups, but even those have fierce competition. Bilar don't, really.
The texture is the secret: dense enough to bite into, soft enough to give immediately, chewy enough to last a few seconds. Most Western marshmallow products are too fluffy to register as candy this way. Ahlgrens nailed a specific Goldilocks mouthfeel in 1953 and the world hasn't matched it.
