What Kastanjer are
MAOAM is a Haribo brand from Germany, and Kastanjer are its chewiest format — dense squares that take real effort for the first few seconds and then give way all at once. If you like a chew that makes you work, this is the shelf. If you want something that dissolves, it is the wrong one.
Why a German chew is on a Swedish candy site
Because in Sweden they are a pick & mix staple rather than a novelty — they have been in the bowls for long enough that most Swedes would be surprised to hear they are not Swedish. We carry the singles as well as the multipacks for that reason. We are not going to describe them as Swedish candy; the Swedish-made shelf is at Swedish candy.
Which flavour, and one warning
Wild Berries is the sharpest, Bubblegum the sweetest, and Fruit the one with a hint of liquorice extract sitting behind the citrus. None of them are vegan — gelatine and beeswax are both in the recipe, so if that is why you are here, this page is not for you and the vegan page is.
Kastanjer versus the rest of MAOAM
MAOAM's better-known format abroad is the flat rectangular chew in a paper wrapper. Kastanjer are the Nordic shape — squarer, denser, and sold loose from the pick & mix wall rather than in a multipack. It is the same family and a noticeably harder chew, and the reason people who grew up with the wrapped version are surprised by it.
If your jaw is not looking for a fight, Ahlgrens Bilar is the opposite end of the texture range and about as soft as candy gets.
